The first school in Britain - and perhaps THE world's first - opened this week.
St Mary’s C of E Primary School is based in Wymondham, Norfolk – the home of the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) and NCCL (Norfolk County Cricket League).
But it won’t be teaching sport or nature(野生动物) to its pupils until September at the earliest after a £300k overhaul.
Instead, the teachers will be focused on teaching reading and maths with an emphasis on helping children from disadvantaged backgrounds 【1】 to catch up with their peers.
Pupils who do not speak English as their first language and those with special educational needs are also set to benefit from the changes.
Headteacher Sally McCulloch said: ‘We need to ensure we give every child the best possible opportunity in life from the moment they walk through our doors.
‘This new scheme will help all our children love learning so much that it becomes a game they can’t wait to play! We want our children to be lifelong learners, no matter where life takes them.’
The school has been given technology including interactive whiteboards in every classroom, iPad minis for every pupil (一年级到六年级每人都有一台iPad mini作为学习工具), and a brand new reception area.
It was originally built in 1876 but now houses state-of-the-art facilities.
It even has its own 'green' garden complete with bird boxes, insect hotels(昆虫旅馆)and a pond. It is hoped the garden will attract wildlife and inspire the children's learning.
The school's rebranding means it has ditched the blue and gold stripes on its uniforms which were meant to represent cricket and rugby, two sports traditionally associated with public schools.
In fact, until Thursday, it didn't have any sports facilities at all. Now there are four football pitches, three rugby pitches and six tennis courts.
The school's new look has been inspired by American public schools, whose motto is 'education for life'.
A parent of one of the youngest pupils said: 'When I saw what had happened to the school I thought "wow". You can really tell how much thought went into it. The kids are going to love it here.'
