You help children in many ways. Perhaps you visit sick children in hospital. Maybe you help look after children in your community.
You might read books with children, play games with them or teach them how to do things like cooking.
Many elderly people are not able to look after themselves in their own homes, so they live in nursing homes. This can often be a lonely and unhappy time in their lives. So one project that helps is for young students to go and visit people in nursing homes, and take part in games, craft activities and musical activities with them.
Another form of volunteering is to work with animals and provide help to shelters which look after animals. This can involve making sure the animals are clean, well fed and happy. There is also work to be done to look after the buildings.
Yet another type of voluntary work is to help clean up the local environment. This is especially needed in areas around rivers and beaches, where rubbish and other waste can get left lying around. It is hard work, but it makes a real difference to the quality of the environment.
